The State Theatre “Dimitar Dimov” was established in 01.09.1960 with three artistic ensembles – pop music, drama and puppets.
In 1980 the puppets staff became an independent formation.
The first play staged in the theatre was “Misunderstood Civilization”. It was directed by Kosta Tsonev.
In 1961 the director of the theatre was Nikola Gunov. The plays staged there: “Ivaylo” by Ivan Vazov, “Ivan Shishman” by Kamen Zidarov, ”Mother in law” by Anton Strashimirov etc.
The director of the theatre since 01.06.1964 till 1985 was Teofana Tekelieva. The plays staged: “Place-hunters” and “Borislav” by Ivan Vazov, “The Public prosecutor” by Georgi Djagarov, “At the foot of Vitosha” by P.Yavorov, “Holiday in Arko Iris” by Dimitar Dimov, “The Third Bloody Minded or New Adam” by Ivan Martinov.  Among them appears another plays of world classics: “Perfidy and love” by Schiller; “Enemies” and “Children of the sun” of Maxim Gorky, “Invasion” by L. Leonov, “Major Barbara” by B. Show.
In the theatre over the years were working players as: Ivan Yosifov, Mihail NIkolov, Ivan Petrovski, Ana Lazarova, Minka Moneva, Yordanka Shopova, Gospodin Vezirev, Lozan Shopov, Asina Yanchena etc.
In the theatre had been worked the producers: Vihroni Chachanovski, Petar Trenev, Kiril Mladenov, Mladen Kiselov, Lilyana Mecheva, Veselina Atanasova, Konstantin Kamenov and artists: Ardash Tavukchiyan, Vaska Dutckinova, Aleksandar Stoychev. Guest actors: Lyubomir Kabakchiev, Violeta Bahchevanova, Rachko Yabandjiev, Georgi Kaloyanchev, Stoyanka Mutafova, Andrey Chaprazov, Georgi Georgiev – Gets, Jorjeta Chakarova, Tatyana Lolova, etc.
From August 1985 till February 2011 and from 1999 till 2002 the director of the theatre was Dimitar Ignatov – producer by profession, graduated the class of Professor Boyan Danovski.
There were two artistic ensembles in the theatre – orchestra, ballet, singers and dramatic ensemble.
The staff of the theatre is 160 people. Theatre performances annually are over 300 in front of 250 000 people audience.  The young troupe of actors led by Dimitar Ignatov and young script – writers Ivan Karev and Vesela Statkova gave repertoire and the theatre became popular and approved not only in regional but in national aspect. Performances of Bulgarian modern writers: Stefan Tsanev, Petar Marinkov, Nedyalko Yordanov, Yordan Radichkov, Stanislav Stratiev; also J.Ani – “Antigona”, Sl.Mrojek “Happy event”, Horiya Lovinesko - “The game of the life and the death in the desert ash”. Performances of modern Spain authors as: Riasa and Valieho “In front of the gaping grave” and “The portrait of the lady with puppy”. There were also performances of classic authors: Moliere, Goldoni and Turgenev.
In 2000 the musical formation was closed. The puppet theatre “Philip Philipov” joined to the theatre. By decree of the Council of Ministers theatre was renamed in “Drama and Puppet”.
The director of the theatre from 1999 till 2002 was Petar Savchov.
After 2002 the director of the theatre – Dimitar Ignatov formed a new staff: Professor Rumen Rachev and docent Boryana Georgieva, producer Plamen Panev, script-writer Nadya Miteva. There were a lot of young people in the staff. The theatre revived with the performances: “Bulgarian folk tails and songs”, “Theatrical exhibition” and “Treasure of Sylvester”. Theatre won prestigious reputation in the international forums.
Repertoire of the theatre is formed by: “Albena” by Yordan Yovkov, “Nora, which was singing in her mind” by Zdravka Evtimova, “Church for wolves” by Petar Anastasov, “The last night of Socrates” by Stefan Tsanev, “Occasional situations” by Kamen Donev, “Madness” by Irvine Welsh, “Hamlet” by Shakespeare, “January” by Yordan Radichkov.
In 2010 year by decree of the Council of Ministers the State Drama and Music Theatre “Kadriye Lyatifova” joined to the theatre. Since February 2011 the director of the theatre is Plamen Panev.
